    Notes:

The lion has been the emblem of the Hess Family for nine generations. It has come to symbolize the bold and persevering nature of founder Donald Hess and our winery home on Mount Veeder. “Live Each Day with the Heart and Courage of The Lion” has been the Hess Family credo for nine generations and The Lion Cabernet Sauvignon represents the very best Cabernet Sauvignon we produce from our estate vineyards on Mount Veeder in the very best vintages. The 2014 vintage marks the second vintage that is a winemaking collaboration between consulting winemaker Celia Welch and Hess Winemaker Dave Guffy.

    • Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
    • Appellation: Mount Veeder
    • Aging: Aged in 65% New French oak barrels for 22 months
    • Acid: 0.62 gms/100ml
    • pH: 3.61
    • Alcohol: 14.8%

Blended of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon The Lion has a very deep garnet-purple color and nose of baked blueberries, plum preserves and creme de cassis with a wonderfully spicy undercurrent featuring Chinese five spice, black pepper and fenugreek with touches of cigar box and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound at this youthful stage, it has a rock-solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and spicy. 158 cases were made. Forget this one in your cellar for 3-4 years and drink it over the next 15+. - Robert Parker 96 Points

The flagship 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon The Lion (82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 65% new barrels) is truly a beautiful wine. Blueberries, creme de cassis, cedary herbs, graphite, and violet notes all emerge from this ethereally textured, full-bodied, ultra-fine, and super elegant 2014. Possessing polished tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish, it’s a perfect representation of the forward, silky, approachable style of the vintage. Drink this sensational Napa Cabernet Sauvignon anytime over the coming two decades. - Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points

The top of the producer’s pecking order, this estate-grown red employs 17% Malbec, a house specialty, which adds richness and grip to the structure. Leathery tannins, clove and black pepper ride along layers of red cherry and cassis, finishing fully integrated and powerful in weight. - Wine Enthusiast Magazine 92 Points
