The weather of the 2014 vintage will be remembered for its unpredictability, especially during the last stages of ripening and the harvest itself. Had there been some rain showers at the end of August, and had they been followed by a dry and mild September, then some outstanding Port wines would have been created, but the weather was not playing along. Nevertheless, we believe that in 2014 the Vale de Mendiz produced Ports, albeit in smaller quantities and with lower potential alcohol levels, that offer freshness, the pronounced acidity typical of the Niepoort style, as well as beautiful colour – all this in spite of the rains arriving in the middle of harvest.
The harvest began early, on 1 September, in the vineyards whose grapes form the base of some excellent Ports with elegant structure. The first lagar from the “Vinha da Pisca” vineyard was harvested on 12 September and already boasted beautiful, intense colour in the lagar and great finesse after fortification.
With a wonderfully concentrated ruby hue, this Port shows intense aromas of fruits of the forest, spice and dark chocolate, accompanied by a subtle floral undertone, making this an overall elegant and deeply expressive wine. The palate is fresh and seductive, with good texture and body. Superbly smooth tannins and a lively acidity provide a long, firm and vinous finish. As this is a traditional unfiltered LBV, it is definitely suitable for further cellaring.
