Dry farmed, sustainable/non-certified organic. Multiple small lots of of 50-75 year-old vines from Rioja Alavesa and Alta are used to create MdT Crianza. The regions Calcareous clay soils moderate yield, while goblet trained old vines limit the production of this offering. Micro lots of Mazuelo are sourced where for its tannin structure and color, while small amounts of Viura are used for acidity.
Hand-picked fruit is destemmed, and allowed to go through native fermentation with twice daily pump-overs favored over punch-downs to retain freshness. The 3% Viura is cofermented with Mazuelo as it is co-planted with each variety from their 75+ year old sites. Post fermentation, the wine is aged in a mixture of French, American Oak for 12 months before bottling without fining or filtration. The Wine is then aged in bottle for a minimum of 14 months before release.
2017 was a “Very Good” vintage according to the Consejo Regulador, yet one marked overall by April frost and a late season drought. This, along with a hot summer, led to higher levels of sugar concentration and lower yields. Carefully farmed vineyards resulted in superb quality.
The 2017 Marqués de Tomares Crianza screams Rioja with its saddle nose and dark cherry and licorice aromas. The 2017 vintage over delivers with Classic charm and old world depth while hugging ripe fruit and purple flowers. Enough funk and rustic charm to satisfy traditionalists with enough ripeness and body to balance the velvety texture. Always tobacco.
