Ghost Pines knows no boundaries. Without the restriction of traditional winegrowing boundaries, we source grapes for Ghost Pines wines solely for quality and flavor from wherever we find the best fruit. Though sourcing changes from year to year, this philosophy delivers wines of consistent quality with a distinct combination of richness, smoothness, and balance that could never be mistaken for ordinary. Named for the indigenous Gray Pines dotting Northern California’s hillsides, Ghost Pines embodies the progressive spirit of California winemaking and inspires a sense of individuality.
In 2016, we chose to select grapes from Monterey, Sonoma and Yolo counties to create a full-bodied Pinot Noir. For all three counties, the 2016 vintage was early with a mostly normal yield of exceptional quality grapes. The growing season included winter rainfall, a warm spring and an early summer with cool nights and warm sunshine that allowed the grapes to ripen evenly and develop concentrated flavors. Each lot was made separately and blended together in Sonoma County at our Healdsburg winery.
51% Yolo County: Yolo County is known for rich soil, warm days and mild Delta breezes. The quality fruit from this region imparted rich, concentrated flavors.
36% Sonoma County: Sonoma County fruit enhances this PinotNoir with firm structure and dark cherry, pomegranate and lavender characteristics.
13% Monterey County: Monterey County fruit imparts incredible finesse, bright notes of ripe red cherry with a great acidity for lift.
Ghost Pines Pinot Noir is easy to enjoy and offers a unique take on the variety. This wine opens with Pinot Noir’s distinguishing bright plum and cherry notes, leading to a smooth, satin-like texture, but then it takes a turn. The flavors are bold and more intense than the average Pinot Noir, with characteristics of cherry pie, cranberry, and ripe plum. Oak aging imparts hints of vanilla, baking spice, and freshly roasted coffee beans. A hint of cocoa, plush tannins, and a round mouthfeel lead to a satisfying finish. Not your average Pinot Noir and that show we like it.
