Sterling Vineyards wines express true varietal character—that set of aromas and flavors a grape varietal develops when grown in the terroir that suits it best. Carefully selected winemaking methods highlight each wine’s unique personality and guarantee the high quality that distinguishes our reputation for impeccable taste. Sterling Vineyards Napa Appellation wines come from 14 diverse vineyards in this world-famous region, from the Carneros District in the south to the northern reaches of Calistoga.
Our 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a great illustration of this vintage, offering ripe, brambly fruits on a fleshy and broad canvas. The warm, dry conditions of the year allowed bold flavors and big tannins to develop, unfolding with boysenberry pie and fragrant baking spices. A burst of fresh fruit opens the palate, picking up red currants and hint of oak. Plush and long, the flavors span through the long finish, accented by a hint of spice.
Framed by the Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vaca Range to the east, the Napa Valley extends from San Pablo Bay up to Mount St. Helena. Along this 30-mile stretch are 16 different sub-AVAs and twice as many microclimates and variations in soils. To capture the diversity and showcase the incredible range of this region, we selected fruit from multiple vineyards, pairing the concentrated color and tannins of mountain fruit with the broader, fleshier texture of valley fruit.
At harvest, we collected fruit from several vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. The grapes were brought to the winery and allowed to rest in a cold soak for three days, gently extracting the rich color and aromas. To capture the unique profiles of the different vineyards, each lot was fermented separately. After 15 months of aging, we blended the lots together, creating a harmonious whole, expressive of Napa Valley. “It’s like a well-orchestrated choir,” explains Winemaker Alison Rodriguez. “We achieved a beautiful continuity and balance by blending several smaller parts together, much like bringing in sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones and bass.”
Following a few challenging vintages, 2012 was excellent. The weather was steady and even, almost textbook in its temperatures. The vines were well balanced and grapes ripened uniformly. Without weather issues, we harvested on our schedule, just as the fruit reached its optimal ripeness. - Winery
