Wine:
Displaying the character of a good villain, our 2013 Zinfandel is both dark and complex. The wine swoops in with bold, jammy black fruit, accented by peppery spices and rich cola notes. A brambly forest berry profile exudes distinct California personality, matched by bold American oak nuances. The palate is smooth and soft with balanced tannins, followed by a long, zesty finish. Invite intrigue to your next barbecue, pairing our Villainous Zinfandel with grilled rib eye steaks, barbecued pork or roasted shallots and potato salad.
Vineyard:
A majority of our grapes come from vineyards in Lodi. We selected this region for its excellent reputation for Zinfandel. Here, the warm days and cool nights allowed the vines to develop ripe, jammy fruit flavors and zesty, peppery tannins. We used fruit from both older, head-trained vines as well as traditional VSP trellising. This combination of growing styles provided a nice depth and complexity from older vine and younger vine Zinfandel.
Winemaking:
To deliver the ripe varietal character, we harvested the fruit at the peak of maturity. At the winery, the grapes were de-stemmed and placed into stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Diligent cap management with regular pump-overs allowed good contact between the skins and juices, extracting maximum flavors and aromas. Prior to bottling, we blended in a small amount of Petite Sirah to boost the fruit flavors and add structure.
Vintage:
A consistently warm growing season, 2013 was fairly short but yielded good flavor development. Dry conditions kept yields down and berries small. Harvest began on the earlier side and our Zinfandel was picked when the fruit’s natural sugars and acidity were in perfect balance.
