The 1966 vintage of Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was introduced as the first wine in California with a vineyard designation on its label. Now in its 47th vintage since that historic Napa Valley benchmark, our famed Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville continues to charm and impress wine lovers around the world.
“The 2013 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is expressive of all the characteristics that make Martha’s Vineyard so recognizable. Notes of mint, bay leaf, cocoa powder, sweet blackberries, ripe raspberries and black cherry are complemented by the signature kiss of Limousin oak. The signature of the 2013 is its concentration of flavor from a near perfect growing season, and a bold structure that guarantees a long life of cellar aging.” - Brittany Sherwood, Winemaker
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard is a powerful wine. Beguiling aromatics make a strong opening statement. Pine, rosemary, mint, sweet red cherry, pomegranate and a touch of new oak give the wine its bright, lifted feel. Even with considerable air, and also taking into account the personality of the year, the 2013 Martha’s remains closed down and not at all expressive. My impression is that this could have been a materially better wine. - Vinous Media 93 Points
This is a powerful vintage of Martha’s Vineyard, a huge wine following a graceful line, so it’s neither overwhelming nor oversaturated. It has the structural elasticity of 2013 in its tannins, a salty umami note that highlights the dark currant and green fig flavors. Joe Heitz made the first Martha’s Vineyard cabernet in 1966, from the May family’s 34-acre parcel in western Oakville, with a small-berried selection of cabernet that gives the concentrated fruit for this wine.
