    Appearance: Deep garnet

Aromas: A very complex nose laden with dark fruit. Plum, dried cherry, clove, cardamom, and cassis with hints of peppercorn and cocoa.

Flavors: Smooth entry with ripe berries and cherry. The mouthfeel is full, yet seamless, showing well-knit tannins woven into a supple and full palate. On the mid-palate, notes of cassis and sage lead to a long finish of dark fruit, toasty vanilla notes, and savory hints of tobacco and black olive. Rich and inviting.

    Winemaker’s notes:
Magnificat is one of the original Meritage blends of California, a wine Franciscan Estate has proudly produced since 1985. Named for J.S. Bach’s masterpiece, it is crafted to be as seamless and harmonious as its musical namesake. Starting with over 200 small lots of red wine, Magnificat is created to showcase our finest Bordeaux blend of the vintage. Carefully assessing each lot as it ages in barrel, we create the blend with repeated trials and blind tastings. Depending on how the varieties express in a given year, the composition will be different, always shaped to provide consistency of style.
The wine is founded on Cabernet Sauvignon, but true to Meritage, uses other Bordeaux varietals to give roundness, structure, and rich complexity.

    This growing season:
2012 was a vintage with nearly idyllic growing conditions. After an unusually dry winter, a wet April provided most of our rainfall for the growing season. April proved to be a roller coaster for the vines, offering up a mixture of very wet weather and cold nights that required frost protection, followed by summer-like temperature spikes late in the month. From there, it was smooth sailing for the spring and summer. An abundance of sunny, warm days brought flowering three to four weeks ahead of 2011. A typically warm summer was followed by a September with cooler than average temperatures and clear skies. In early October, a 5-day heat wave with temperatures hitting 95-100°F and humidity down to an arid 20% brought the focus on the Bordeaux reds to the forefront. The first Cabernet Sauvignon from our Franciscan Oakville Estate Vineyard was harvested on October 13, with the last coming into the winery on October 30. Our Merlot ripens earlier and we began bringing in the perfectly ripened fruit on October 6, with the last arriving on October 25.
