Winemaker Notes:
Selected grapes come from the Rioja Alavesa vineyards with soils comprised of a mixture of chalk, sand and clay. The vines have a medium age of 30 years and are grown using the traditional “gobelet” system. Fermentation and maceration take place over 20 days in stainless steel, temperature-controlled vats. Daily pumpovers are carried out to achieve the optimum color and tannin extraction. Malolactic fermentation follows and the wine is racked twice before going into American and French oak barrels were it ages for 24 months. The wine is racked three more times prior to bottling and is aged an additional two years prior to release.

Vanilla, smoke and cinnamon are the initial impression from the 2011 Viña Eguía Reserva, a pure Tempranillo aged in barrel for two years. As with the other wines from this Bodega it's soft, approachable and easy to drink with fine tannins, clean flavors and aromas. A crowd-pleaser. 1.5 million bottles. - Robert Parker 89 Points
