    19 BLOCK MOUNTAIN CUVÉE:
Winemaker selections from 19 favorite blocks in our Veeder Summit vineyard, at elevations ranging from 1,300 to 2,000 feet, form the backbone for our mountain cuvée. Steep slopes and volcanic soils laced with clay give vines a challenge, producing tiny, intensely flavored berries. Year after year, this is one of our favorite expressions of mountain winemaking at its finest.

    TASTE WITH THE WINEMAKER:
“Over the past three decades we’ve come to know our mountain home quite well. Year after year, there are certain special blocks within the vineyard that produce fruit that speaks loudly about what Mount Veeder is all about. Each vintage this becomes our mountain cuvée, and this blend is led by Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, both signature grapes and easily recognizable for bold, juicy black fruit flavors and aromas of blackberries and wild mountain blueberries. Tannins are tamed by careful aging in new French oak, with resulting vanilla, oak spice and hints of clove and cinnamon layering welcomed accents through a balanced, lingering finish. Mount Veeder is Napa’s coolest and wettest mountain growing region, resulting in harvest dates well into November, allowing fruit to ripen in an almost leisurely journey to your glass. We craft the “19 Block” blend for immediate enjoyment, but this wine will continue to evolve and shine for years to come.” – Dave Guffy, Director of Winemaking

    VINTAGE NOTES:
“Early, even & excellent” is the best way to describe the 2013 growing season on Mount Veeder, beginning with a moderately warm spring with little moisture, leading to an early bud break. Just one heat spike occurred during the summer, allowing the grapes to lazily hang on the vine and ripen with determination. A touch of rain threw a scare in September but warmer days and breezy weather kept the fruit in good order, ultimately resulting in an abundant harvest with memorable quality.

The 2013 Proprietary Red 19 Block Mountain Cuvée is a blend of 61% Malbec, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Syrah, all from the estate on Mt. Veeder. This blend has worked well, exhibiting an opaque purple color, a beautiful nose of incense, camphor, blackberry, licorice and a touch of espresso. It is full-bodied and concentrated, but with supple tannins and a roundness and juiciness – even for a 2013. This should age nicely for at least 10 or more years. - Robert Parker 93 Points

Intense and rugged, with a rustic property to the dense, extracted dark berry, crushed rock and cedary oak flavors. Hard to predict where this one is going as it is quite awkward. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Drink now through 2024. 8,680 cases made.–JL - Wine Spectator Magazine 85 Points
